Stuck? Ask yourself these 2 questions.
As I prepare for my July show, there’s always a period of struggle when I’m figuring out what's working and what's not.
Here’s a tip that’s helping me now…
I ask myself two questions: "What do I like in this painting?" and "Where do I feel most free?" Then I look for those areas in the work. When I feel more free, my authenticity shines through. It’s not about painting wildly, but rather creating work that feels less constrained. Authenticity comes through and my work feels more natural. This approach keeps me in touch with myself and quiets the externalities.
What helps you stay free in your practice? Let me know in the comments.

Dream It, Believe It, Achieve It: Suzi Dafnis - Art2Life Podcast Episode 131
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.14 часов назад
Art2Life.com - Are you struggling to cast a vision for yourself, your art, or your business? Has imposter syndrome taken hold? Do you feel confident that you can make your dreams a reality? Suzi Dafnis walked into a room with 30 other business owners about to start the art class I was offering our mastermind group, admittedly incredibly nervous. Though confident in any business environment, she...
Is it time to simplify your art?
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.21 час назад
Something's come up as I've been working on many new paintings in the studio. The work is evolving quickly, but it looks complicated. I'm losing track of what it is I want to show. It reminds me to pause and remember what I was excited about in the first place. This painting had more texture, shapes, and color - the things I add almost out of habit, but the design is what I love. Simplifying th...
Printing Gratitude with Raquel Baldocchi - Art2Life Podcast Episode 130
Просмотров 6 тыс.День назад
Raquel Baldocchi is a mixed-media contemporary artist in the Bay Area. Raquel draws inspiration from her grandmother, who created textile art, made beautiful scrapbooks, and crafted ornaments every year for Christmas. Raquel’s college boyfriend’s mother was a printmaker. She influenced Raquel so much that Raquel pursued a degree in printmaking. Now, every piece of art that Raquel creates is inf...
My favorite finish for my paintings…
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.14 дней назад
Today I want to show you my favorite finish for a painting - cold wax. I use cold wax on both acrylic and oil paintings to create a final beautiful surface. It often takes two coats that I then polish to create a river stone finish - it’s not glossy, and not matte, it’s just right. I love the natural quality of the wax and the yummy luster it leaves after polishing. Cold wax works so well for a...
My art practice is getting a change in scenery…

I’m in beautiful Mexico and I want to make some big art down here for my upcoming show. A change in environment always gets my creative juices flowing! I paint on canvas but like to mount it to large wood panels for support. Luckily I found a woodshop who can make panels to my specifications. I just tested one and it’s going to work great! Having this new place to make art is so exciting! A bea...
Here is one of my favorite mark-making tips…
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.28 дней назад
This week I have a tip for you that I regularly use to create cool marks and texture - some dark and some light. I love the idea of working with these opposites. If I want a light painting for instance, my first layer will be very dark. Then I cover that underpainting with lights. Once I do this, I can go back in to bring out the dark marks by scratching through the light surface. It seems coun...

I’m so excited! The paintings for my July show are coming along and I have a title for the show - FLOURISH! I love this word because I consider it the next level of becoming alive. To flourish is to move into a higher level of the human experience. It includes conditions such as creativity, self-expression, curiosity, and awe! It’s almost a childlike state of wonder and amazement at the mysteri...
Using old paint stinks!

It’s Mother’s Day in the US, so I want to first wish everyone celebrating a very Happy Mother’s Day! And I’m back again this week to bring you another cautionary tale! I’m having new experiences with old acrylic paint. While working with old wet paint, I notice a strong odor. I figured it would disappear when the paint dried but it didn’t. The whole studio stinks! Turns out acrylic paint in a c...

Art2Life.com - Louise Fletcher is an artist and teacher, gifted at helping her students connect with their emotions and unleash their artistic voice. But she wasn’t always aware of her gift. She genuinely thought she had no artistic talent because she couldn’t sit in front of a canvas and execute a vision. When she learned that she could play with paint, and find joy in the process, it changed ...

All artists want to succeed. It is very hard for any artist to make a living this is why you see people teach or coach. This is the truth. The biggest problem is that people don't support the arts. How do we solve this problem??? All artists would succeed if people supported the arts. Local artists.

So true in my experience. Often, in my work I am wondering if this way of approaching a certain area is ok? Instead of: wow: this area feels great/new etc and it also works in the context. Then, more often than I could care for, I find myself watering that area down to what I know is ‘acceptable’. And every time I could bite myself in the butt! 😅

Great ideas. Gives me a new point of view when staring at my work! very helpful. Have one in my studio this very moment that needs me to practice this new vision. Sometimes I think I'm too bold, too much color; I see on the screen how much white you are using in this particular painting. I'm going to practice using more whites, lights and neutrals hard as that seems to be given my love of bold color! Thank you for your generous teachings. can't wait to sign up for your classes next years (2025).

I’m an A2L newbie and having so much fun that getting stuck is not as much of a problem as painting so long that I lose track of time! But when I don’t intuitively don’t like what’re I’m going, when the painting looks muddy, too busy, etc, I get up and leave the area. Get a drink, make a phone call or go outside n breathe. That usually clears my mind …and the painting

If I had one bit of encouragement from a knowlegable person, if I had feedback, or a place to display the art, or even one sale, I would be gung ho! I am isolated, without any artists to talk to, share notes or learn from. I am ready to give up because of it. If after 1 1/2 years of trying to paint now, i need someone to say: this one is good, this style is your best, or you have zero talent for visual art, go back to music or writing, it would be a huge blessing just to know. Im so goal oriented, I need sales or some way to gauge my level of "success" at It. Some offer this service for a fee, do you?

my father told me when I was at high school that I had no colour sense whether it be clothing or doing art in general so hew stopped my hopes in it's tracks and now he's dead my adventure started sort of 10yrs after that insult I started dabbling in drawing even though I wasn't very good then I found water colour pencils that I still have today and tried them not sure on how they worked that was when my son was a toddler fun times and I also taught him how to make shapes with play dough so after that when he turned 22yrs I picked up a paint brush that was my true passion like doing landscapes, seascapes and having a go at city scapes and using gouache, acrylic, and watercolour paints, crayon ,sharpies stencils is where I am today.

Obviously you also have great sense of colour combining! thanks a lot - I don't know how many of your videos i watched but probably most of them!
